Call for applications to access targeted funding to deliver projects aimed at enhancing the interprofessional experience within maternity and neonatal education

NHS England is offering funding to support providers to carry out projects aimed at improving interprofessional experience (IPEX) within maternity and neonatal education. This funding is targeted at undergraduate and pre-registration learning. The aim of Inter-Professional Experience is take Inter-professional learning to a new level, in which the entirety (or as much as possible) of the clinical learning experience is delivered inter-professionally. It is therefore anticipated that projects will offer more than a limited number of classroom or simulation sessions outside the usual working /training clinical environment and that instead projects will be embedded, as far as possible, within the clinical setting and within the normal experiential learning.

Summary

NHS England is inviting bids from providers to design and deliver experiences which bring together students from the different professional groups supporting maternity and neonatal services, in particular medical students and student midwives. The focus for these projects will be activities targeted at undergraduate level learners where cultures begin to evolve.

The total value of the available funding for this initiative is £250K and we are looking to fund one or more projects from that fund.  We are inviting bids from providers with expertise in the delivery of maternity/neonatal education and or/interprofessional learning and we envisage receiving bids from a range of providers including academia, clinical practice, professional bodies and royal colleges.  In addition to bids from single providers we would welcome bids from collaborations involving multiple providers and we are therefore not setting a maximum value per bid.  Providers may also submit multiple bids.

Each proposal will be evaluated based on its merits and how well it meets this specification. The amount each bidder requests will depend on the valuation of their proposal. While bidders can submit proposals for the maximum funding available, we would expect higher value tenders to be collaborations delivering either multiple projects or learning across multiple sites.

Eligibility

Any applicants must have (and be able to evidence) expertise in either:

a) the delivery of maternity and/or neonatal education

b) the design and/or delivery of interprofessional learning

Objectives

We anticipate that the lessons learnt from these projects will be transferable to other settings and applicable to both undergraduate and postgraduate learning. We are looking to commission projects that will deliver a range of interventions / learning programmes of differing formats and delivered in different settings. Our aim is that the outputs from these funded projects and programmes will help build an evidence base to inform the development by NHSE of a good practice framework for IPEX in maternity and neonatal settings. The overall ambition is that by enhancing interprofessional experience at undergraduate level we will be able to improve teamworking and culture between different staff groups within professional in practice in line with the recommendations made in the 2022 reports of maternity safety reviews led by Donna Ockenden and Bill Kirkup.
